Disciples in Mission

Disciples in Mission:

Two thousand years ago, Jesus told his followers, "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age: (Matthew 28:19-20)

Jesus' command still holds true for us today; Jesus asks us to go out and make disciples.

The bishops of the United States, in Go and Make Disciples: A National Plan and Strategy for Catholic Evangelization in the United States, tell us that our lives as believers are part of the story of salvation, and we are to share our stories and our faith with others in our everyday lives.

Disciples in Mission uses the three goals of Go and Make Disciples as a basis for a spiritual formation of the parish, a formation oriented to evangelization.

The three main goals of Go and Make Disciples are:

1. "To bring about in all Catholics such an enthusiasm for their faith that, in living their faith in Jesus, they freely share it with others."

2. "To invite all people in the United States, whatever their social or cultural background, to hear the message of salvation in Jesus Christ so they may come to join us in the fullness of the Catholic faith."

3. "To foster gospel values in our society, promoting the dignity of the human person, the importance of the family, and the common good of our society, so that our nation may continue to be transformed by the saving power of Jesus Christ."

Over the course of the three years the Disciples in Mission runs in a parish, it integrates prayer, the Sunday liturgies, faith-sharing groups for adults and teens, catechesis, family activities, planning, and follow-up activities into a coherent, parish-wide experience of evangelization.

St. Barbara began the Disciples in Mission process in 2007/08. We are set to begin year 2 this Fall.

If you would like to help with the implementation of this process, please see Disciples in Mission, Parish Leadership Team , under Committees.
