Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA):

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

RCIA (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the process through which adults who are not baptized, or who have been baptized in other faith traditions, are brought into the Catholic Church.

The RCIA Journey is a four-phase process. First, during Inquiry, an adult comes to the Church to inquire about Catholic beliefs and practices. Individuals who seek to know more about the Church are called inquirers. Each inquirer must journey at his or her own pace. While specific Inquiry sessions are held in the parish each year, any one interested in learning more about the Catholic Church is invited to contact Joe Killian at

The second phase of the journey to the Catholic Church is called the Catechumenate. During this period, the serious catechetical work of passing on the truths, stories, prayer and experience of the Catholic faith becomes the focus. The parish community offers specific encouragement and witness to the individual through the assistance of Sponsors. During this phase, Catechumens (unbaptized) and Candidates (baptized in another faith tradition), participate in Breaking Open God's Word, as an extension of the Liturgy of the Word at Sunday Eucharist. The length of the Catechumenate may vary depending on individual needs.

The third phase of the journey is the period of Purification and Enlightenment (Lent). The focus during this phase is more in interior reflection than in catechetical instruction. The character of this time is a retreat with spiritual recollection in preparation for the Celebration of the Paschal Mystery (Holy Week and Easter). Baptism (if not previously baptized), Confirmation and Eucharist usually take place at the Easter Vigil.

The final phase of the journey is Mystagogy, the focus of which is a fuller and more effective understanding of the mysteries of the gospel message, the sacramental experience and the continued sharing on the experience of being integrated into the parish community.
