| Proclaiming the Good News of Christ, Our Lord and Savior | ||
The format Jesus used to build His church, although simple in structure, was extremely effective. He realized the importance of ‘face to face’ contact. The original twelve apostles of Jesus would build His church, not by using a letter campaign or a media blitz, but by ‘hitting the dirt roads’ of the Middle East, contacting people ‘face to face’ and inviting them to join the church of Christ.
Over the centuries that followed, the church of Christ has grown by numbers that are staggering but not surprising. The ‘face to face’ invitation is still the superior method of contact; shockingly, however, the “fact to face’ invitation many times gets placed in the corner in favor of the new and more current ways. New ways to evangelize, although a great read on paper, are usually difficult to implement and, thus, fall into the cracks of failure.
Recently, I asked Mary Ellen Stilwell, our Director of Evangelization, to head up and develop a Home Visitation Committee for our parish.
The core task of the Home Visitation Committee is to take a page out of the evangelical play book of Jesus and visit every ‘active’ and ‘non-active’ household in our parish. We will contact on a ‘face to face’ basis those who are active in our parish and learn from them what we can do better. We will consult with those in our parish who are inactive and ascertain from them what we have done that has made them walk away and stay away. In gathering this type of information and with prayer, we should be able to hold on to those members we have as ‘active’ and bring back to church those who are ‘inactive’.
This in and of itself is challenging - and might not yield the type of result we desire; however, this cannot be a reason for not doing it.
The new Home Visitation project begins this month. Mary Ellen has formed a Home Visitation Steering Committee. They have selected Country Farms as the area in which to begin visitations. They are currently seeking residents of Country Farms to begin visitations.
You will be hearing more about this effort in the months to come. I ask that you please pray for the success of this project.
