News from Fr. Georges in Montrouis, Haiti:: January 2010

Message received by a Parish Staff member:

Father Georges called me this morning at 4:30. Communications are very limited and we were disconnected after about 4 minutes. There were no deaths in Montrouis itself but there were people from Montrouis in Port au Prince and he performed 2 funerals yesterday for the bodies that were recovered. Also, there were many students living and studying in Port au Prince and it is feared that they were buried in the collapse of the schools. It is a mass exodus from Port au Prince and there is a constant stream of people coming through asking for food, clothing and medecine. Gasoline is very scarce and there are some markets open in various places but as you anticipated, the prices of things have sky-rocketed. His family and relatives survived the earthquake, but their house in Port au Prince is uninhabitable. There is 90% destruction in Port au Prince as well as Jacmel and Leogane. Although the estimate is at 200,000 dead, he fears there are many more buried under the rubble. They are digging mass graves with as many as 15,000 in one grave. There was no damage to the church or the school but everything has been structurally weakened. I had many questions for him but at this point we were disconnected. This is the news for now.
