Description of Music Ministry:
The mission of St. Barbara’s Music Ministry is to provide quality, prayerful music for the glory of God at parish liturgies. While fulfilling this mission with the help of God’s grace, we strive to:
- Promote sincere worship of the Lord through the FULL, ACTIVE, CONSCIOUS PARTICIPATION of the assembly at the celebration of Mass and other liturgies.
- Kindle within all who hear and participate a spirit of FAITH, HOPE, LOVE, JOY, and PRAISE.
- Provide a way for SHARING FAITH and SERVICE to our Lord and each other.
- Encourage and enhance the PRAYER LIFE of each parishioner.
- Spread the GOOD NEWS of our Lord Jesus Christ in a way that touches hearts like only music can.
- Bring people CLOSER TO GOD by enlivening their spirit and renewing their faith through the worship of the Lord in song.
The music ministry is experiencing an exciting period of newness and growth. If you think God may be calling you to serve, please GIVE IT A TRY! The various roles that are currently offered for music ministers include:
- Instrumentalists – Most liturgies are accompanied primarily by a keyboardist. We welcome anyone who is interested in serving as a substitute accompanist to audition. Other musicians sometimes offer their talents on complementary instruments (electric bass, percussion). Woodwinds and brass performers may eventually be added for special feasts and liturgies.
- Cantors – These individuals perform a very important and rewarding ministry in leading the assembly in song. Cantors serve at weekly Sunday liturgies and holy days, and some also contribute to weddings and funerals. Except for funerals, cantors are usually scheduled well in advance of the liturgies, so schedule flexibility is available. Capable singers who are interested in the cantor ministry will be provided training and all the support they need.
- Adult Choir – Our choir has a rich history that we hope to continue to build upon. The choir sings throughout the school year, typically at 9:00am Mass on Sundays but sometimes at other times and feasts. The Adult Choir rehearses at 7:00pm on Thursdays in the church. New members from 9th grade through adult are welcome to join.
- Youth Praise Choir – Under the enthusiastic direction of Amelia and Chris Steele, this rejuvenated singing group of children from Kindergarten through 8th grade provides a special energy in praise to God that only kids can offer! The Youth Praise Choir rehearses at 5:45pm – 7:00pm on Thursdays in the church, and sings about once a month at a Sunday liturgy and some feast days. New members are welcome.
We are also blessed to have a unique men’s harmony group called “Brothers in Praise.” This well-blended group of six men started singing together this summer. They plan to continue providing spirit-filled music at various liturgies throughout the year. Thanks so much for your service, Brothers!
