Saint of the Day

Funeral Readers/Vigil Readers

Information:

Funeral Flowers

Funeral Readers read during the Funeral Mass. You read two scripture readings and the intercessions that are chosen by the family. There is one person for this. They are given an instruction sheet and will be paired with a seasoned reader for observation the first time. If needed a seasoned reader will be with them the next time.

A Vigil Reader is part of a team of four. There is the Priest, the Canter, and two readers. You read either the scripture reading or the intercessions that are in the book Order of Christian Funerals that you will be issued. Who reads what is usually decided by the readers, but sometime by the Priest. You will be paired with seasoned readers for observation the first time and if needed with seasoned readers the next time.

Impact of this Ministry:

It is response to God’s call to offer spiritual support to the bereaved so that all those that mourn may receive the healing comfort of God. Christian consolation is rooted in the hope that comes from faith in the saving death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.

This is a Corporal Work of Mercy.

Readers have said it is a very fulfilling feeling to read especially at Vigils. The comfort you see in the faces around you cannot be described by words.

Anticipated Time Committment:

There are no meetings to attend. When there is a Funeral and Vigil you are called and asked if you are available. When you sign up you are asked when you are available. For example: Vigils just certain evenings a week, for funerals Saturdays only.

Are there any special skills needed?

Skills that are needed - Reading in front of a small group helps, but most importantly is the wish to help those grieving by reading God’s word.
