Father Arnel A. Estrella, priest from Philippines serving in the Diocese of Greensburg, dies at age 52
Father Arnel Aldave Estrella, who has served the Diocese of Greensburg in its International Priests Program since March of 2015, died Saturday, October 27, 2018, at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, after an illness. He was 52 years old and had been a priest for 25 years.
Born March 31, 1966, in the Philippines, he was a son of Delia (Aldave) Estrella of Camaligan, Philippines, and the late Jose T. Estrella. Father Arnel was educated at Holy Rosary Minor and Major Seminary in Naga City and ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Caceres June 15, 1993. He served as a parochial vicar and parish priest in the Philippines before coming to the Diocese of Greensburg. He served as a pro-tem parish priest in residence at St. Peter Parish, Brownsville, with parochial responsibilities at the partner parishes of St. Peter and St. Cecilia, Grindstone (June 2015), parochial vicar of St. Barbara Parish, Harrison City (2015-17) and Christ the King Parish, Leechburg, and St. Gertrude Parish, Vandergrift (2017-present). He also provided pastoral and sacramental ministry to Holy Family Parish, West Newton in 2017.
Father Arnel was a soccer enthusiast, enjoyed basketball, wrestling, boxing, tennis, table tennis, reading, and was known for his great sense of humor.
In addition to his father, Father Arnel was preceded in death by his brother, Jonathan Estrella; and his sister, Marilyn Estrella.
He is survived by his mother Delia in the Philippines; siblings, Edgar Estrella of Camaligan, Philippines; Maria Zinnia (Elson) Pielago of South Elgin, IL; Jose (Suzette) Estrella, Jr. of Quezon City, Philippines; Daisy (Mario) Maala of Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, UK; Jeffrey (Joan) Estrella of Bacolod City, Philippines; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The body of Father Arnel will lie in repose and friends and relatives will be received on Friday, November 2, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Christ The King Catholic Church, 125 Park Road, Leechburg. An All Souls Mass will be celebrated Friday at 6:00 p.m. His body will continue to lie in repose in the church on Saturday, November 3, 2018 and friends and relatives will be received from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m., followed by a concelebrated Christian Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. with The Most Reverend Edward C. Malesic, J.C.L., Bishop of Greensburg, presiding.
Father Arnel's body will then return to his home country of the Philippines, where a Mass will be celebrated in the Archdiocese of Caceres followed by interment near his deceased family members.
